Strengthen Your Core with a Ball Chair

September 11, 2009 by anthony · Leave a Comment

Check out aBall Chair.

Strengthen your core while sitting! While these ball chairs may look incredibly uncomfortable or even impossible to sit on, once you’ve tried one, you’ll realize they’re easier to use than you think.

The balance ball chair is pretty much exactly what it sounds like—it’s basically a lightweight chair frame with a large ball (made from vinyl with no latex content) instead of a seat. Developed by a leading chiropractor, Dr. Randy J. Weinzoff (specialist in exercise/sports rehabilitation, and alleviation of chronic pain), these ball chairs are designed to be comfortable and provide ergonomic back support while at the same time helping you exercise (sitting at your desk). You can’t slump down or have bad posture with this chair. If you do, you may just find yourself on the floor! Instead, you’re forced to use your core muscles to keep yourself planted firmly on the ball (feet planted on the floor) and this keeps your spine in alignment like it should be.

These chairs are perfect for anyone who needs to work on their posture or who wants to get a workout while working. If you don’t have time to go to the gym, for example, using one of these ball chairs is a great way to work your core muscles while doing other tasks. You don’t even necessarily have to use the Physio Ball Chair while sitting at a desk. You can use it in your living room while watching television, reading, or working on any hobby. It’s also very good for those who have suffered from back injuries. Because it keeps the spine aligned correctly and doesn’t put any pressure on the back, it can help relieve pain from nerve compression, slipped discs, and other injuries. If you have back pain, you may find that the Ball Chair is one of the best investments you’ll ever make.

Reiki Equipment

September 9, 2009 by anthony · Leave a Comment

Reiki is a special type of massage developed in the 1920s.  It was designed to help a person relax and reduce their stress via a laying on of hands by a trained professional.  During a Reiki session, a person lies on a massage table while the practitioner places their hands over certain parts of their body.  The practitioner will hold his or her hands on each part of your body for a few minutes.  massage-matOne interesting aspect of Reiki is that it is not massage—the practitioner does not actually touch you.  Instead, they help your natural Reiki, or life force, energy flow to where it should.  That is, of course, if you believe in the concept of Reiki.

Whether or not you believe in it, Reiki has a fairly good sized following, and those that practice Reiki need certain pieces of equipment.  The major piece of equipment is, of course, the massage table.  While Reiki is not actually a massage, the same kind of table is still used.  This cushioned table allows the patient to relax and breathe easily while the Reiki professional performs the energy manipulation.

There are some other options to buying expensive massage tables.  For example, a massage mat can provide the required cushioned table.  These mats can be placed on any bed or other surface.  The massage mat isn’t body length, but it does include a foot bolster to help handle lower back stress and a face rest.  These mats can be used for things other than Reiki, of course, and those who do not practice Reiki may actually want to have a massage mat for other uses.  If you want to have a nice, relaxing massage, for example, having one of these mats will be useful.

Low Emission Protein Foods

May 15, 2009 by anthony · 1 Comment

Many people don’t realize it, but it actually takes almost ten times the fuel to produce a calorie of protein made from beef than it does to create a protein made from grain.  tofuThis is a huge amount of fuel, yet most people have no idea just how much greener grain protein is.  If you’re looking to help cut down on emissions produced by the food you eat, here are eight different foods that are high in protein but low on emissions.

Beans – beans actually return nitrogen to the ground they are grown in, allowing farmers to stop using fertilizer and other harmful chemicals as well as providing protein.

Soy – as a meat substitute goes, soy has been around for quite some time.  It is, however, a source of complete proteins.  That means it has all the essential amino acids the body needs to function.

Herring – this fish, popular in Northern Europe, is a good source of protein for those who love the taste.

Novel Protein Foods – these foods look like meat but are not.  However, they do contain a great amount of protein.  Many are actually produced in a lab and look just like regular meats.

Hemp Protein – another plant-based protein, hemp also contains all the necessary amino acids.  It can be found in powder form and used to create protein shakes and other foods.

Nuts – while nuts usually only contain about ten percent protein, they do also contain healthy fats that can be a good addition to your diet.

Chicken – it’s almost impossible to cut out animal protein from our diets, and chicken is one of the lower emission animal products out there.  It’s also very healthy for us.

Spinach – few people think that spinach would be a good source of protein.  While it’s not that great a source (no green vegetable is), it is the best as far as leafy green vegetables go.

Exercise Your Hands and Charge Batteries at the Same Time!

May 5, 2009 by anthony · Leave a Comment

Many people make use of the special Chinese pair of balls to exercise their hand and fingers.  Called baoding balls, these two metal balls are said to work like a shiatsu massage or like hand acupuncture, and they have long been used in traditional Chinese medicine.  roll-chargerAccording to experts, baoding balls stimulate several acupuncture spots on the fingers and the hand that are connected to the lungs, heart, spleen, kidneys, and other organs.  Whether they are helpful in increasing your health or even fighting off things like carpal tunnel has long been debated, and no one really has an answer.

However, whether you believe they work or not, you may be interested in the baoding balls created by Jiang Qian.  Called the Roll Charger, this set of special baoding balls opens up to reveal two intersecting slots: one for an AA battery and one for an AAA battery.  Put a rechargeable battery of either size in each ball and start twirling them around and around in your hand.  The kinetic energy created by moving the balls around is transferred to the batteries, charging them up.

Once your batteries are completely charged, you’ll see a special LED light blink to tell you that you can remove the batteries.  Of course, you can still use the balls for exercise, although they may not weigh quite as much when empty.  What’s great is that these kinds of devices have started appearing everywhere.  After all, movement does create what is essentially free energy.  Your movements make kinetic energy that is not being harnessed in any way, but as devices like the Roll Charger become more and more available, that will all change.

Going Green and Losing Weight

April 10, 2009 by anthony · Leave a Comment

Want to drop a few pounds, save some money, and help save the environment while you’re doing it?  It’s completely possible!  Here are a four different ways you can save on money and help the environment at the same time.groceries

First, control portions by using smaller plates (and never, of course, use paper plates).  Eating smaller portions does two things: it helps you lose weight and it means you have no left over food (i.e., no wasted food).  By using smaller plates, your portions actually look bigger, so it appears that you are eating more.  Since you’re not wasting food, you’re saving some money as well.

Second, while eating out is expensive, it is nice to treat yourself sometimes.  If you do eat out, you often don’t have any choice in the portion.  However, if you know you won’t be able to eat the entire meal, split it into two and ask for a take-home box.  Even if the take-home portion isn’t large enough for a meal itself, you can easily fix a small side dish and make it into lunch or dinner for the next day.

Third, stay away from the grocery store until you absolutely need to go shopping.  Some people head out to the store whenever they’re out of one item, but this often leads to several cans of food being ignored in the cupboard until they go bad.  Force yourself to eat up all of your perishable foods before purchasing new groceries.  If you’re not certain what you can make with what’s on hand, search the internet for new and interesting recipes.

Fourth, avoid spending the money on prepared foods.  You can often buy a block of cheese for much less than a bag of grated cheese, for example.  Sometimes, prepared foods include preservatives and other artificial ingredients, plus cut up foods go bad more quickly.  Save some money and do a little kitchen work yourself.
