W.H. Hudson, a close observer of Argentine fauna, noted the peculiar behavior of the Vicuna, the cameloid that sought common ground on which to meet approaching death. Hudson reported that it these cemeteries were restricted to the colder sections of the guanaco range and pointed out that the animals often died in the brush-covered valleys where they were accustomed to gather for protection against the worst of the storms. He suggested, therefore, that the guanaco, when sick or wounded, was "only seeking an historically-remembered place of refuge-not death," as Darwin had suggested.

Having been cleared from Patagonia, the guanaco now faced extinction in Tierra del Fuego, the farthermost corner of the Western Hemisphere, and, of his vast original range, he now roamed with comparative safety only in those parts so rugged that only the vicuna could share it with him. Only the vicuna and the vicuna hunter-for man, who hunts most creatures to extinction, had soon found an excuse to kill the vicuna. It is the animal's misfortune to sport the softest, finest wool in the world, and for this reason it was hunted from the time Pizarro landed in Peru until recent years. It was shot almost to extinction.

The South American countries concerned-Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Chile-belatedly realized the economic value of the creature they were about to write off as extinct, and each nation passed laws prohibiting the hunting of the vicuna and dealing in or transporting the pelts. Bolivia, however, permits limited shooting by government hunters. Today in La Paz, and elsewhere in the nation, it is possible to purchase vicuna robes, and a traveler is permitted to take with him from the country a single one of these, providing it is properly stamped and cleared through Bolivian customs. Despite this exception, the animal has increased greatly in numbers throughout the southern mountains in recent years. Prices for the robes naturally are high. At La Paz I was shown a cuello robe, which is of the finest type, made from the skin of the neck, which sold for 2,500 bolivianos, a unit of currency worth at that time about two cents, American.

Other robes sold for more, while those made from the skin of other parts of the body were somewhat cheaper. Of course there is some bootlegging of the valuable hides, in Bolivia as elsewhere. In Lima I asked at a curio shop if it were possible to purchase a vicuna robe, although I knew it was illegal to deal in them in Peru. The shopkeeper, after satisfying himself that I was a turista, said: "Come back this afternoon. What sort of robe did you want?" Needless to say I did not return, but I am satisfied that bootleg robes could be bought there and elsewhere in the protected areas.

Has anyone taken an Everest Base Camp trip and can recommend a touring company??? I WANNA GO!!!?

I love hiking; I've done the Rockies, Lake Tahoe, Tetons, Patagonia, Great Wall.

However, when it comes to getting on all fours I wouldn't want too much of that. I also love photography. I would like a 2-3 week trip of trekking 4-6 hours a day, lots of sight seeing and good food. Thoughts?

i am looking at buying this fleece, but am not sure what color to get it in. I already have a brown and black fleece and all the feedback has pointed to either the chili red or elm green. Which ever of those has the highest count, that's the one im getting. thanks in advance. If it helps, I have brown hair and a slight olive skintone

Based on your skin tone and hair colour, I'd say the Elm Green for sure.

The red will be very harsh against you, the key is for it to look natural and casual, the chili shade will pretty much clash.

Plus, green, along with other earthy tones, will match pretty much anything you wear with it.

Sailing and hiking - which boot?

Hi, I'm going sailing and hiking in Southern Patagonia. Sailing - staying still, possibly cool/inclement weather. Hiking, moving around, possibly rugged terrain/inclement weather. I have a nice pair of snowboots that keep my feet warm and are waterproof, but I worry that they may bee too warm/insulated, and non-breathable for hiking. Any advice on whether to take a hiking or my snowboots?

Will you help me pack for school?

I need a list of apparel that I will need I am going to school in the mountains of the West where it will be all seasons outdoors. Summer through Spring. I don't have any fleece or rain parkas or anything for being outside all the time and I am packing to go soon and need to buy stuff at REI Patagonia and I have no idea where to begin. Thank you!

REI has great quality stuff, but they can be pretty pricey. I like to explore REIOutlet.com, they have sale items that are often less expensive.
Otherwise, the key to dressing for the outdoors is to layer. So make sure you stock up on inner layers in addition to outer layers like jackets. Most people recommend a core layer of cotton or thermal- something close fitting and breathable- then a second layer- probably something zippy or button down, loose fitting (in hot weather this is your outter layer), a third wooly layer if you really need it, and lastly an outer layer- which is your jacket that is wind resistant or water proof or whatever it is your climate requires.
