If you are thinking about going on one of the Danube river cruises for vacation it is important to know how to pack. Things you need to consider include the weather, ship requirements, and room for souvenirs. Danube river cruises offer many things to do and see but if you pack wrong you might find yourself needing to spend vacation money on needs.

Danube river cruising takes place during the warmer months of the year. You should pack light clothes for warm weather. Packing light means light pants and light shirts. You don't want to be overdressed for this vacation. The days will be warm. The evenings may cool down a little so it is important to bring a light sweater in case you get cold. Another thing to consider when you are packing your clothes is comfortable shoes. Many people bring flip flops because they are going on Danube river cruises thinking they will be sitting on the deck viewing the scenery the whole time. This is not the case. You should bring a pair of good walking shoes because you will depart the ship and want to walk around the port cities. Without comfortable shoes you could be miserable.

Even the 3 day cruises have formal or dress dinners you should be prepared for. When you pack for a cruise on the river it is fine to pack mostly for comfort and casual wear. However, in the evenings on the ship you might attend a captain's or manager's dinner. This dining experience doesn't require you to dress nice but you should. Some cruises have a formal dinner which requires the passengers to wear a tuxedo or formal gown. Make sure you are aware of any dress requirements for special occasions on the ship. If you plan on attending an event like an opera in a foreign country, you will need to bring the right attire.

It is also a good idea to consider the different places you are going to travel to along the cruise and all of the people you might be bringing souvenirs back to. If you are bringing souvenirs home for people you need to be sure to have plenty of room in your suitcase. Don't over pack your suitcase and not have room for souvenirs. Danube river cruises have shops on the ship and there will be plenty of opportunities to shop at each of the ports. If you don't have room in your suitcase then you will have a miserable trip home carrying all of the bags with you through the airports and on the planes. In addition, some airlines may choose to charge you fees for additional carry-on luggage or if you need to check in another bag. You might want to do a comparison and see which suitcase is the best for your trip. You don't need to pack a lot of clothing when you take a 3 day cruise.

When you are packing for Danube river cruises it is important to pack light clothing for warm weather that is comfortable. What clothes should I pack for Europe?

I am enrolled in a fall semester program to Europe! I can only bring a suitcase NOT exceeding 45 pounds! I need some advice from previous visitors to Europe. I want to be efficient with what I pack since I will be traveling around Europe for four months. Someone suggested I look into Patagonia wear because I could easily wash those clothes in the sink &hang dry without wrinkles. Also, what shoes would be good and durable for walking the cobblestone streets and mountains? Any other input and advice would be great!

I would definitely look into the Patagonia wear. You can find lots of it online. It is lightweight and easy to care for and quite durable.

For some items it might be a good idea to just take a little extra money and buy them if you need them.

Some things that might be generic:

basic toiletries - small sizes of things you use every day
changes of underwear and socks for 2 weeks - always take extra
mix and match outfits that don't wrinkle easily - shorts and tops - buy some of the pants where the leg bottoms zip off
a pair of long pants, and/or or a skirt for evening if you are female and if you will be eating out or things like that
swimsuit in case you get the opportunity to use it - or buy it there if you need one
cell phone and charger - maybe - if you can use it there, and depending where you live you might need to buy an adapter
a laptop - think about charging - the adapter again - and whatever electronics you want to take - I would take only essentials
extra money, or know a way to get it from home, and a safe method to carry it
your ID/passport, and photocopies of them carried separately
a written list of important phone numbers, including the number to call if your credit card gets stolen if your will be carrying one - remember cell phones sometimes get stolen or lost
a pair of comfortable walking shoes and a pair of sandals
hair dryer - if needed and if you won't be staying in a hotel or have access to a hair dryer
brush/comb
camera
a small backpack
a flashlight and spare batteries - I never travel without them - you never know when you'll need them
a hat
pyjamas/sleepwear
a watch with an alarm and a face you can see at night
a battery operated reading light

If you will be hiking in the mountains you really should have good shoes with ankle support.

When first arriving in Sydney, it's striking just how large and diverse this first city of Australia truly is. Collections of art, animals, cultural icons and coffee houses makes for a dizzying combination.

1. The Sydney Opera House

Peeking over the entrance to Circular Quay is the very different yet highly recognizable Sydney Opera House. A memorable meal is guaranteed if you choose a seat along the waterfront. Cafe fare and fine food can be enjoyed while gazing across the Sydney Harbour and then up at the arches of this grand old Sydney icon. Get a glimpse behind the scenes with a tour of the arch beams that redefined modern architecture. Or, have recent backstage events whispered to your small tour group, as you tip-toe the House's secret rooms. Concerts are being staged more often on the steps of the Opera House. Cultural event details are listed in street press and local papers, often stocked for use within cafes.

2. Sydney Harbour Bridge

The other major recognizable icon of Sydney's built heritage is the Sydney Harbour Bridge, or - as it's known to locals - "The Coathanger".

Or is that "Cliffhanger"? You may have spotted grey forms crawling across the gentle curve of the Bridge. If so, you have witnessed the safest extreme sport out - Bridge Climbing. The Storey Bridge in Brisbane offers a similar breezy adventure tour, but as any Sydney-sider will tell you, things in Sydney are just bigger - no, not just the coffee prices. If you do consider the climb over a cup, be assured your time is well used to suit-up, rope-up and climb onto a view of Sydney you will not forget. 3. The Rocks

Just behind Circular Quay is the oldest colonial settlement in Australia: The Rocks. Surrounding the stoic, heritage-listed shops in this historical area is jagged black rock. Smooth cobbled streets wind across this area - the closest thing Australia has to a time machine. Sussanah Place, a terrace of four houses built in 1844, is now a museum, the rooms presented as if nothing has been moved since the 1840's... You almost expect to see a settler sweeping the steps. You can feel the presence of this place just as strongly from a lane way cafe or in the renovated warehouse shopping galleries.

4. Bondi Beach

Located on the east of Sydney's rambling shores is a 1km stretch of sand and sea swells that draw sunbathers and surfers from around the world. If you dive into the surf at Bondi Beach, check every few minutes where you are. Yes, in the water: keep in mind that Bondi water has up to five rips (strong currents) at any time. The northern end is the gentler side; the southern end is closest to "Backpacker's Rip", or the "Bondi Tram". Avoid a ride on this, or you might end up on an open ocean adventure. Red and yellow flags are your friends, as are the men and women in blue long-sleeved shirts, the lifeguards!

5. Darling Harbour

A calmer alternative if you're looking to enjoy Sydney's shores is Darling Harbour. Overlooking the CBD, the area offers breathtaking views and varied entertainment, both night and day. Restaurants and shops line the wharf, the Indian place at the eastern end also being a worthy visitor destination. Darling Harbour is home, too, to an IMAX theatre complex, showing purpose-made 2D and 3D IMAX films on the largest screen ever built, as well as all the latest blockbuster movies at regular sizes.

6. Cuddle a Koala

Cuddling koalas is almost required by law in Australia*, and the best place to do it is at Taronga Zoo. One of the world's largest and most diverse collections of birds, animals and (for the souvenir-seeker) stuffed toys, Taronga offers areas including Amazonia, Wild Australia, Wild Asia, Large Cats and Giant Tortoises. There's also an incredible collection of reptiles. It's a highly-regarded conservation zoo that's well worth your time, even if only to meet and support endangered animals (by entry fee; hugs are extra).

7. Circular Quay

And with a ferry ride across that iconic harbour, we're back where we started, at Circular Quay. This terminal for 1000+ capacity seacraft is a sight in itself, best taken in from a cafe opposite. A red-brick Georgian building looms in front of the Harbour Bridge, housing the Museum of Modern Art: a must-see, even if only for a brief visit. (Chances are the exhibitions will keep you engaged inside for longer.) And of course, there are those white arches that peek into view all around Circular Quay...

When the time comes to wave farewell to Sydney, you'll be glad you had these destinations in mind: a unique piece of the heart of Australia will certainly leave with you when you do.

Hiking clothes and backpacking clothes need to function to a higher standard than everyday clothes. That's why they're often more expensive. Shop all the sales you want, and you will save money, but that extremely expensive waterproof/breathable coat will only be marked down to "very expensive." Time for some more radical ways to find cheap hiking clothes.

Consider what you really need for the trips you have planned. If you'll be scaling peaks in Patagonia for a month, you may have to stick with the best sales you can find on the high-quality stuff. If, on the other hand, your trips are fair-weather overnighters, a two-ounce, two-dollar plastic poncho isn't out of the question.

Even on the more extreme trips you can often find cheaper alternatives. Did I take a $400 waterproof/breathable rain suit to the top of 20,600-foot Mount Chimborazo? No, I took my papery Frogg-Toggs rain suit. You'll find these at golf shops, and yes it's waterproof and breaths well too. It cost me $49 for the set, and I have used it for years, on many rainy trips, with only one duct-tape repair.

Do you like to hike in running shoes, as I do? Start watching the sales on out-of-style shoes. I've bought brand-name $90 shoes for just $25. With savings like that, I'll gladly be out of style.

I stopped getting blisters when I gave up on expensive, high-tech, too-hot hiking socks. I hike thirty miles now without a blister in comfortable, lightweight, white nylon dress socks. They're less than an ounce and about a dollar per pair.

Buy Used Hiking Clothes

The only hiking clothes I won't buy used is footwear. Other potential backpacking clothes are worth checking out whenever I find them at a rummage sale or thrift store. I've found a Gore-Tex rain jacket and North Face vest at a thrift store for a few dollars each. My thrifty used wool sweater weighs just 11 ounces, and is almost as warm as the newest models.

One of my favorite thrift store discoveries was silk shirts. I learned that they weigh just tree ounces, and show up on the racks regularly for $3. They are comfortable too, though on the trail some of the styles make me look like I'm searching for a wilderness disco.

Making Hiking Clothes

I can't recommend sewing your own hiking and backpacking clothes, but I have made a few simple things. The sleeve from an old thermal shirt became a one-ounce ski mask with scissors and three minutes of sewing. Socks with finger-holes make nifty hand warmers. As an insulating layer, I wore a four-ounce piece of poly batting like a tunic under my Frogg Toggs, to the top of Chimborazo and other mountains. Finally, without too much sewing, you can often modify clothes to make cheap hiking clothes.
