Power Shopping in Mississauga

As one of Canada’s largest municipalities and the convergence of several major international routes, the city of Mississauga is home to numerous opportunities sure to thrill any shopper. From tackling some of the country’s biggest malls to window shopping at specialty stores on the street, Mississauga shoppers will find all that they need for a successful day of power shopping. Here are a few of the many different alternatives Mississauga offers for the enthusiastic shopper.

Meadowvale Town Centre: Meadowvale is a small community located within the larger boundaries of the Mississauga area. For those who want to take advantage of great shopping beyond the crowds to be found in the city proper, Meadowvale Town Centre offers a variety of stores and a distinctly pleasant atmosphere. The site offers five different beauty salons as well as a cobbler and engraving specialist. Clothing stores include Dome, Crazy Lee’s, and Cavery Fashions.

Sherway Gardens: This huge mall will be sure to delight any fan of big city shopping. The stylish building encompasses 500,000 square feet of space which contains over 240 retail stores. The sleek modern exterior is perfectly complemented by the beautiful gardens, fountains and skylights of the interior. This mall claims to be the safest and cleanest big shopping experience to be found in the Greater Toronto Area. Fans of upscale and mid grade stores alike will find their favorites in Sherway Gardens, which is home to Holt Renfrew, Abercrombie and Fitch, and Lululemon. In addition, shoppers can find department store stalwarts such as Sears and The Bay as well as upscale boutiques and goods shops such as the Pottery Barn.

Square One. The largest mall in Mississauga rivals in size almost every other mall in Canada with over 1.6 million square feet of retail space. This mall is truly a unique experience; aside from the many shopping opportunities, it houses several community clubs and even a church! The shopping experience includes a huge food court as well as many other established restaurants, and of course the selection of over 350 different stores and boutiques. Shoppers can find stores at Square One that are unique in Ontario, such as jewelry experts Swatch and La Swiss. Shop for ladies’ fashions from well known names such as La Senza and Sirens to top of the line boutiques including Hamiko Collection and Jacob Connexion. Banana Republic, the Gap, Guess? and Tommy Hilfiger are also represented inside this huge mall.

Shopping in Mississauga truly offers an amazing variety of opportunities and experiences. From the small town feel of village centres to the organized bustle found in huge shopping malls, there is an experience perfectly suited to every shopper.

Nestled between the ocean and the mountains is the gorgeous town of Whistler, British Columbia. This Canadian jewel is known mostly for its skiing and is home to the 2010 Olympics.

Beyond the beautiful scenery and snowy ski slopes is Whistler Village containing a variety of shops to interest anyone. There are a fair share of typical ski shops selling warm jackets, snow pants, and ski boots, but further exploration of the village will bring shoppers into several hipper shops.

The first store I discovered was the popular Canadian brand Lululemon Athletica. Known for its functional but trendy women's workout clothes, I found myself in a sea of shoppers in the otherwise quiet village. After a few minutes of browsing the selection, I began to see why. The store is packed full with enough styles of workout pants, bras, and tops to satisfy any gym rat. I was interested in restocking my sports bra collection and grabbed a handful of bras that were available in multiple styles and an abundance of colors. My favorite bra was a turquoise sports bra with removable padding. The padding didn't make me any bustier, but provided more bounce protection than any sports bra I had yet to own.

I discovered one small shop that carried a variety of ultra-hip and super sparkly apparel. Being a girl that loves anything that sparkles, I was instantly drawn into the store. After a perusal of the racks, I walked out empty-handed. Although the clothes were fun, the price tags weren't. Nothing seemed unique enough to drop hundreds of dollars on.

I found my other purchase at a gift shop. Not one to pass by any store that could possibly be carrying an item I could love, I walked into the gift shop expecting the usual tees with Whistler screen printed on them and not much else. I was mostly right. Yet, hidden in the back of the store was a light blue tee with a cartoon drawn of a 1950s photo of a slender dark-haired woman staring up at Whistler Mountain with her navy 50's ski outfit on. Below the picture was the word Whistler sewn in cursive with bright red thread. The laid-back simplicity of the adorable tee spoke to me more than the sparkly glamour of the other shop. After all, Whistler isn't about glitz, it's about skiing and bumming around. The t-shirt captured the essence of the quaint town. And for $15 American dollars, I couldn't pass it up.

Am I a bitch or is she unreasonable?

So we're getting married next year, I'm in law school and we're saving for a house, so needless to say we are broke lol.
My FSIL (FH's brothers wife) called me to ask what we wanted for Xmas this year. I told her I would speak with fiance but there is nothing either of us really need. I asked her what she wanted and she said lululemon hoodie (ummm hello thats over $100.)
Anyway, I tell fiance about the convo I had with her and he suggested that we scrap gifts between them to save money.
So I send FSIL a nice email saying, "Hey, we know you guys buy for a lot of people, and there is nothing fiance and I need, so do you want to stop exchanging gifts? Let me know."

That's when shit fit the fan. She has ignored me and has told people how mad she is at me. She won't return my calls.

Sorry for the length, but what do you think??

PS - this woman is in my wedding party, and is nothing but headaches. It's one drama after another with her.

If my best friend sent me that...I would be like, What the heck, I buy you gifts because I love you and it's Christmas...are you just trying to say you do not want to buy me anything? because being tight on money and not being able to buy gifts is one thing, that's fine (her and I have been there, and it's no big deal) but to say "so do you want to stop exchanging gifts" sounds like you just don't like her or appreciate what she wants to do for you, and you definitely don't Want to get her anything. I'd be offended too! You phrased it all wrong!
Maybe something like "We are tight on money this year and we really love you guys and would like to be able to get you something cool, but we can't do it this year, so to make things fair how about we exchange gifts under $10 this year." or $20...whatever your budget allows.

Like I said...there have been years where either she was tight on money, or we were. We usually buy each other awesome presents. But when we were not able to get her and her family stuff one year, they still got us neat stuff and were totally happy t do it. Because it's about giving! On their kids birthday we went a bit overboard and spent quite a bit, because at that time we could. This year we will be mailing each other gifts under $20, and she will find some really cool stuff, she always does. Maybe some wild fuzzy socks, a hemp ankle bracelet or something odd like that, once she got me a hot pink teddy bear...if you try you can make it really special, even without a lot of money...which is much nicer than just saying let's stop exchanging gifts.

Building a brand on opposing destructive practices or human rights abuses is very noble and good for business. The immediate result is identifying your brand with those with the same viewpoint. Generally, social causes are highly charged with polarized viewpoints like the topic of abortion. So you will immediately attract a following but you will also repel those with the apposing view. You win some ...you loss some.

One of the positive attributes of hanging (another human controversy) your brand with a cause is the public relations that can be generated for your brand. Media isn't interested in writing about your product but throw in a controversial topic like global warming and animal test and now you have a story. If you align your brand with a well oiled NGO like Greenpeace, you have access to their media and PR expertise. And they know how to engineer a story.

The successful brands that have wrapped themselves around social activism generally have a controversial figurehead who is out spoken and willing to make a social point.

Anita Roddick, founder of The Body Shop is a case in point. She ran many controversial marketing campaigns including working with Greenpeace to help "Save the Whales" then switched to Friends of the Earth following a disagreement with Greenpeace.

Lululemon Athletica, a clothing retailer and manufacture of yoga inspired clothing has taken a less controversial approach focusing on human wellness and environmental awareness. They offer yoga classes to staff and customers and wrap the brand with a public manifesto, code of conduct including specific codes for the workplace (i.e., no child labour) and a vision touting "creating components for people to live longer, healthier, and more fun lives". This high ethical standard got them into some hot water last year when The New York Times reported their seaweed based Vitasea fabric was no different than cotton. Lululemon subsequently removed all health claims from its seaweed based products.

Social conscious branding requires a passion beyond just building a superior product it is about standing-up against a social atrocity. It will also redirect energies away from the core business. The more relevant the cause is to what your brand represents the stronger the relationship. For example, The Body Shops involvement with "Save the Whales" is a harder concept to tie to natural beauty products than banning the use of animal testing in cosmetics. The Lululemon focus on health-consciousness also makes perfect sense but the environmental aspect it harder to grasp even if they have reusable shopping bags.

The moral of this story is controversy and passion on a social cause can help sell products and build a unique brand but be ready to attract only like-minded customers and be prepared to handle strong and sometime vocal opposition as you are no longer a private person but a capitalist pig making money of the backs of others.
