In 1996 me and 2 friends undertook our first backpacking experience. We traveled from Costa Rica to Guatemala in 6 months. Originally we had planned to travel for a year, but half way decided to do something more useful with our presence in Central America and applied for volunteer jobs in Honduras and Guatemala.

The travelers we met during our adventure travel from South to North Central America were very different from the travelers you would meet now on the same route. Most people were, just like we were, looking for a real escape. It would have been rare to find anyone traveling for less then 3 months. As a matter of fact, most people had started in the North of the continent, or often in Mexico and were planning to travel as far south as Peru or Patagonia. They would have 8 months or more to do so. The main reason for their trip was not so much traveling in itself; most backpackers were looking for a different lifestyle. Either that or they had already found the lifestyle they were looking for and had successfully made being an adventurer their way of living.

These adventurers had more time then money and were consciously escaping the first world. The idea was to make a statement against modern life and travel to third world countries was a way of expressing disagreement with the hectic first world.

Nowadays if you travel through Central America, you will find another type of backpacker. The adventurer needs to work harder now to find his escape. He will need to travel to even less accessible locations just to avoid the vacation atmosphere found in popular destinations throughout Central American countries nowadays. Backpacking and adventure tourism has grown more fashionable over the last 10 years. It is now most common to take a 3 or even 2 week holiday to an exotic place like Guatemala.

This new adventure tourist is a lot less adventurous as our explorers 10 years ago. He is not interested to leave regular day to day first world life. He is simply looking for a short break from it all. This adventurer has not got the time to really adjust to another lifestyle; he just wants a taste of it, a tiny bite.

The new adventure traveler is not genuinely interested to get to know a third world lifestyle, he is not willing to live like the locals surrounding him on his travels. As if the world was one big museum, he wants to be there and watch from a short distance. The consequence is that local hotels and restaurants need to adjust their services to this new demand, even if this means loosing their own culture. Although the current traveler claims to be interested in other cultures, he is really demanding it to change to his needs. A shift in backpacking culture is sadly leading to a shift in local third world culture.

Over the past few years we have shared the magical Mayan Jungle with people from all over the world, raising their environmental awareness and showing them an alternative Mayan World; one that reveals her unique people, culture and secrets. Our adventures have taken these foreign travelers deep into the jungle where everyone always comes to the same conclusion: "This is Paradise, we have to protect it"

9. North Face Jacket - We're not sure what makes the North Face brand so reputable and stylish, but we're not going to ignore the easy gift indicator. North Face jackets and coats are nice - Pick one in her style and color preference. (You DO know her style and color preference don't you?) If you want to be extra creative, plan a ski trip weekend and get the ski lift pass in advanced - have it attached to the zipper. Expect to spend $100-$200.

8. Lululemon Athletic Pants - If your wife isn't "athletic", skip over this one. Athletic clothing isn't a very good "hint gift." But if she IS, these pants are amazing. She'll recognize that you've done your research and read the reviews. They're about 100 bucks, but the quality and flattering effect are worth it.

7. Makeup - You can't go wrong with makeup - unless of course she never wears it obviously. Head over to sephora.com and check out the Editors Picks category, or do a site search for 'sampler'. The great thing about the multi-makeup kits is that you're not relying on any single makeup product or color or flavor to be perfect - you have a diverse array of products in each kit. ONE of them has to make her happy right? You can find some sweet samplers for less than $50

6. Winter Boots - Help her romp through the post Christmas depression with some styling winter boots. You can't go wrong with Uggs or Steve Madden. Prices, styles, and sizes vary. Expect to drop anywhere from $80 to $300 on boots. If you can't find the right size or style, we advice buying at Zappos - they have free shipping both ways and exchanges for sizes or styles is extremely pain free.

5. The Giant Bean Bag Chair - Have you sat in one of these things? AHMIGOD! They're HUGE and so comfy. She will likely never sit on your lap again though - sorry. Brookstone has a huge one for about $300. Did we mention that they're SO FREAKING COMFORTABLE?

4. Diamond Earrings - We know, We know - jewelry. Here's the deal on jewelry. Rings are scary, especially if you're not married. Stay away from mixed messages. Some simple white gold princess cut diamond earrings are always safe, and ALWAYS a win. You don't need to drop 500 bones on them either, $100 should score you a nice pair.

3. Digital Camera - Prices on digital still cameras have come WAY down in years past, while quality of the images produced have gone way up! We're big fans of Canon, Panasonic, and Sony point & shoot cameras. Price ranges are very friendly, and most brands offer a compact model that's available in lots of girly colors.

2. A day of SPA - We know that gift cards and things like this are USUALLY considered lame - but when you pick a place and plan a day of relaxation for her, there's NO WAY she can be upset. Granted, the initial "opening" of the gift won't be too exciting - but she'll be bursting with happiness when she experiences her day of pampering and massages. $500 well spent - plus you get her out of your hair for a day!

1. A Netbook - These cute little computers are full of win. Ultra light, ultra portable, and ultra affordable. You can find them in pink or blue or white, don't try matching it with the sweater from Mom & Dad though. Our favorite is the Dell Inspiron Mini or the Asus EEE PC, but all of the netbooks on the market seem to be a quality product.

10 Signs You Are Turning into a Fitnut

Have you heard those advertisements promising weight loss with no change in diet and no exercise needed? Don't fall for it. Exercise is so important and not just for your body; for your mind. But keep in mind exercise alone won't allow you to eat whatever you want and lose weight. It is a combined effort. I went through a period in my life where I exercised 6 days a week for about a year and was still 30 pounds heavier. It is a combined effort between a balanced diet and exercise.

I definitely recommend joining a gym to get your exercise in for a few reasons. For one, you will discover that you are not alone.  Every person in that gym is striving towards a similar goal.  There is something comforting to look around and see other people sweating with you and putting in the hard work.

Also, for inspiration! I go to a co-ed gym and I have to admit, if I see a good-looking man lifting weights I may just put 10 more minutes into the elliptical.  Much better than staring at a wall in your basement for 40 minutes.

Another reason is for the variety. If you get bored of the treadmill, there's usually fitness classes you can try out.  I would not be able to do the same exercise routine 5 days a week every day for the rest of my life.

I do have to warn you... the healthier and more fit you become, the more likely you will turn into a fitnut. Here are the top 10 warning signs you are turning into a fitnut.

1.  You can pronounce and spell Acai berry properly and you think it just might be the world's new "superfruit."
2.  You find yourself peeing every 2 hours because you're drinking 8 glasses of water a day.
3.  Your friends are tired of you challenging them to an arm wrestle.
4.  You find yourself wearing your Lululemon pants grocery shopping.
5.  You enjoy your daily bowel movements because you know you're getting enough fiber.
6.  You panic when you forget to bring a towel to the gym because you SWEAT when you work out.
7.  You wonder why people do drugs when you can feel the same way at the end of a spinning class for free.
8.  You don't mind increasing in size... as long as it's muscle, not fat.
9.  You enjoy feeling pain in muscles that you never thought you had.
10.  After a hard workout, water is the sweetest most delicious liquid you've ever tasted... and it's free.

Argentina is in all ways the definition of fabulous, as most Argentineans would be more than happy to tell you. Raise Your Glass, Your Consciousness and Your Elevation
Argentina's central fertile plain of the Pampas is the main agriculture hub and South America's world renowned wine producing region. Córdoba, Argentina's second city, is the heart of this region and full of universities, historic museums and an extremely posh and youthful nightlife. Just southwest of Córdoba is the wine capital of Mendoza. Come for the harvest festivals at the end of February and stay to enjoy the warm hospitality during a vineyard tour of the many bodegas in March and April. The diversity of wildlife and terrain in Argentina is arguably unmatched in South America. Península Valdés is a World Heritage Site on the east coast of the Patagonian region with more visible biodiversity than any other region in Argentina. Sea lions, penguins, whales, armadillos, guanacos and gray foxes all grace the shores with their regular presence at certain times of the year. Enjoy the pristine quality of surrounding Patagonia, quite possibly the cleanest place on earth. Farther south, Parque Nacional Los Glaciares (Glacier National Park) is literally an incredibly moving experience. Strategically placed cat-walks and guided tours allow visitors to see the remarkable sliding ice blocks from stable distances, including the gargantuan Perito Moreno Glacier. This also might be the closest you have ever found yourself to the South Pole!

Argentina's unique north-south axis makes for a most dynamic single-county travel opportunity. Jungles in the far north, glaciers in the deep south, the Incan Andes to the West and just about everything imaginable in between make up just a few reasons why anyone must explore Argentina - not to mention the wildly alive and electrifying epicenter that is the capital city of Buenos Aires. Don't forget that in the southern hemisphere the seasons are reversed. January is extremely hot in the north, with temperatures exceeding 110F in places. The south is cold, still with the coldest months from May to September.
