Should I put BPA-free bottles in dishwasher?

I am so bummed about all of this BPA stuff. I so wish I knew about it even 3 years ago when my 1st daughter was born. I have tossed my Avent bottles and anything BPA I could find in the cupboards. I ordered new plastic BPA-free bottles from greentogrow.com and got some glass Evenflo bottles for pumping. Should we not be putting ANY plastic, even BPA-free stuff, in the dishwaher?

And wouldn't you know it, I'm pretty darn sure that the parts for my Ameda breast pump probably have BPA too. ARGH. Well, at least the milk only passes through it just briefly before dripping into the bottle.

Not to tell you any more bad news but if you eat any thing that is caned it has BPA in it and you are feeding it to your baby in your breast milk. Food packing plants coat their metal cans with BPA and it gets into your food that you eat. Just call a manufacturer and they will tell you yes. Also any thing plastic you put in the dish washer should be fine as long as it doesn't have the 7 in the recycle sign.

Effects Of Using Polycarbonated Plastics

In today's world ‘plastic' is the substance that is being widely used by people for their daily course. Be it from carrying things in a polythene bag or store grains in plastic containers or storing water in PET bottles etc.

Also in this fast pace life the stored food with preservatives is consumed widely all over the world which is mainly preserved in metal cans.

But these cans and the PET bottles is a poison for the person who uses it.

Now the question arises how it is harmful to the humans?

Many transparent 'plastic' bottles are made from polycarbonate, usually a polymer of ‘Bisphenol A'.

In this paper, mainly the harmful effects of Bisphenol A in the human life are discussed.

First synthesized in 1891, the chemical has become a key building block of plastics from polycarbonate to polyester; in the U.S. alone more than 2.3 billion pounds (1.04 million metric tons) of the stuff is manufactured annually. Bisphenol A also known as BPA, is used in the preparation of the polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins, both of which are used in a wide variety of applications that make our lives better and safer.

Also it is an industrial chemical that has been present in many hard plastic bottles and metal based food and beverage cans since 1960.

The polycarbonate plastics made using BPA are used in many food and drink packaging applications while the epoxy resins are commonly used as lacquers to coat the metal cans or bottle caps or water supply pipes.     

Harmful effects:

According to the scientists of University of Cincinnati (UC), the temperature of the liquid has a great impact on how much BPA is released. It is found by Schott Belcher and his team when the polycarbonate drinking bottle is exposed to boiling hot water, the amount of BPA released 55 times more rapidly than before exposure to hot water.

In Feb 2008, Belcher stated that, "There is a very strong suspicion in the scientific community, however, that this chemical has harmful effects on humans, as little clinical evidence related to humans have been found."

In another research carried out in the same University by A research team lead by Scott Belcher, PhD, Hong Sheng Wang, PhD, and Jo El Schultz, PhD, in the department of pharmacology and cell biophysics, found that exposure to BPA and/or estrogen causes' abnormal activity in hearts of female rats and mice. BPA, an environmental pollutant with estrogen activity, is used to make hard, clear plastic and is common in many food product containers. It has been linked to neurological defects, diabetes and breast and prostate cancer.

Belcher and team found that the presence of BPA in the cells caused an increased the release of calcium from sarcoplasmic reticulum – the part of cardiac muscle that stores and release the calcium ions indicating spontaneous release that's likely causing irregular heart beats and may have other harmful actions, especially following heart attack.

In female cardiac muscle cells, the blocking or genetic removal of estrogen receptor beta completely blocked the contractile effects of BPA and estrogen, while in males, blockade of the effects of estrogen receptor alpha caused the male heart to become more 'female-like' and become responsive to estrogen and BPA.

These studies enable us to identify the major cardiac risks after a long term exposure to BPA for a woman's health.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) found that traces of BPA appeared at levels ranging from 33 to 80 nanograms (a nanogram is one billionth of a gram) per kilogram of body weight in any given day levels 1,000 times lower than the 50 micrograms (one millionth of a gram) per kilogram of bodyweight per day considered safe by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the European Union's (E.U.) European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

BPA once ingested is broken down to glucuronide a waste product that is easily excreted. Yet CDC found glucuronide in most urine samples collected in 2004, suggesting constant exposure to it glucuronide in most urine samples, suggesting constant exposure to it.

Chemist Steven Hentges, executive director of the polycarbonate / BPA global group of the American Chemistry Council states that, ‘there is a constant low-level exposure to the chemical presumably in our diet.'

Fred vom Saal, a reproductive biologist at the University of Missouri–Columbia, warns that babies likely face the "highest exposure" in human populations, because both baby bottles and infant formula cans likely leach BPA and according to him, "In animal studies, the levels that cause harm happen at 10 times below what is common in the U.S."

Tim A. Osswald, an expert in polymer engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison stated that during the manufacturing process, not all BPA gets locked into chemical bonds. That residual BPA can work itself free, especially when the plastic is heated, whether it's a Nalgene bottle in the dishwasher, a food container in the microwave, or a test tube being sterilized in an autoclave.

Bisphenol A is a known endocrine-active chemical. Low-level human exposure is widespread due to the chemical's presence in polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins, but understanding long-term consequences of exposure will be challenging. According to Frederick vom Saal, it is a fundamental part of endocrinology, and it is beautifully demonstrated, that stimulation at the cerebellar cell surface receptor is able to cause effects at doses below a part per trillion. Not only are the doses many magnitudes lower than those considered in classic high-dose toxicity studies, but at extremely low dose bisphenol A demonstrate a response that disappears as the dose increases. As the dose increases there is always an increase in response, and hence it is challenging to study the effects of bisphenol A.

Effects at even low BPA exposure include prostate cancer, breast cancer, early puberty onset, alterations in gender-specific behavior, decreased sperm count, affects on fertility, behavioral effects including hyperactivity, increased aggressiveness, impaired learning and other changes in behavior, and other problems. And, astonishingly, BPA is found everywhere making human exposure widespread.

 Precautions:

Baby bottles and sippy cups:
AVOID bottles such as Dr. Brown's, Avent, clear Evenflo, FirstYears, Platex VentAire, Sassy and TupperCare as they are all contain bisphenol A. On the sippy cup side, avoid Nuby cups with handles coming up from the bottom of the cup, Gerber Soft Starter, and Gerber Suzy's Zoo & Sippy Snacker.

BPA-free bottles and sippies flagged as safe include: glass bottles, Born-Free, Medela breast milk storage bottles (made with polypropylene) and disposable bottle systems that have polyethylene plastic inserts. 

If you must use a bottle/sippy made with BPA, you should NEVER store milk in a container in it, as the chemical could leach into the milk.

You should also discard any bottles that are scratched, appear cloudy or generally have an altered appearance from their "new" look.

Exposing to heat, harsh detergents (no dishwashers) and microwaving can cause leaching

It's in the lining of canned foods, where it appears to be the most common way to be exposed. BPA can leach into the food inside the can.

It's especially important to note that infants fed canned formula are at the greatest risk.

Not all the plastic food containers are made up using BPA, but care should be taken while using them so that other chemicals do not leach into the food products.   

There are 7 different types of plastics out of which type 1, 2, 4 and 5 are safe fro storing food while type 3, 6, and 7 are not, with 7 being BPA.

 Conclusion:

It is also important to note that the studies that found the harmful effects were government funded. The industry-funded studies did not find any threat to humans, so if you embark on your own search on bisphenol A, please make sure to note if the study was industry-funded. They have a way of hiding things to protect their bottom line. Searching for and manufacturing safer alternatives can be costly.

Hence, from the above discussion it can be concluded that human exposure to bisphenol A is very less but is increasing rapidly.

Scientists are looking for microbial ways to degrade it to simpler compounds so that the harmful effects can be avoided.

Thus, always heat food in a microwave safe container, glass is best bearing the pain of washing an extra dish is better than that of chemotherapy. It's your choice of selecting the pain you want to bear.

I feel like the worst mom ever! Seriously I do for using Avent Bottles?

For using Avent bottles. I had know I idea about the BPA chemical that is in bottles such as:

Mostly all of them. I wish I would have new this 11 months ago. Now I am switching to Born Free Sippy cups. I do not want my daughter to become sick

Bisphenol-A, a chemical used to make plastics that can also be found in pesticides, fungicides and many other products. Heating plastics with Bisphenol-A is thought to unleash hormone disrupting chemicals into liquids and foods.

Walmart now does not carry bottles not. They are taking them off there shelves today.

The cheaper BPA bottles are NUBY which walmart carries but I prefer Born Free.
OMG that still sounds so horrible.
I heard is on ABC News and CNN New. I guess they have been doing studies for awhile but just now it hit the news and stores are removing bottles.

Just to clarify Gerber Nurser is BPA free.

I'm sure your well aware that winter is a time of colds, cracked lips and inflamed sinuses. But you may be surprised to learn that room humidifiers can help.

This is because the major culprit is often dry air. The fact is that in winter we tend to seal ourselves up at home with the heating on. This dries out the air. The result is that we spend a lot of time in an arid environment and the results are not pleasant.

If dry air is your problem, you can easily solve it with a room humidifier. But to make sure you need one, let's look at five warning signs that your air is too dry. The first sign that your air's too dry is that your skin and hair feels unpleasantly dry and starts to itch. Next, your eyes dry out and itch and your lips begin to crack.

As time passes, you may find your sinuses aching as the membranes dry out. This can lower your body's defenses so you may become more prone to catching persistent coughs and colds. Another giveaway sign is that your start to snore more as the mucus membranes in your nasal passages and throat dry out.

Finally, spare a thought for you poor house plants. If you see them starting to wilt, it may well be a sign that the humidity level in your home is too low. Bear in mind that the above symptoms can have causes other than just dry air. Most people have sinus problems and colds during the cold weather. But if all the symptoms appear together, it would be a good idea to check out the humidity level in your home.

You can do this with an inexpensive device called a hygrometer. The optimum humidity level is from around 35% to 45%, though 15% on either side is acceptable. If you do find your humidity level too low, you can normalize it with an inexpensive device called a humidifier. These are devices that suffuse the air with moisture and raise the humidity level. Just set it up to run and soon your rooms will have the freshness of an oasis.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, babies under 12 months of age should be fed either breastmilk or infant formula. No other type of milk provides all of the nutrients in the right amounts to support optimal growth. Formula companies use human milk as a standard and produce a product, usually based on cows’ milk, which contains proteins, fats and carbohydrates in a proportion that is close to human milk. Then they add vitamins, minerals and other ingredients to bring the final product as close to human milk as possible. As ongoing research reveals factors in mothers’ milk that were previously not known, the drug companies that manufacture infant formula add them, and advertise the product as being “new” or “improved.” Some recent additions are ARA and DHA. Read labels carefully to know what is in the brand you purchase. When you choose a formula for your baby, it is usually best to start with one that is milk-based, since these are tolerated by most babies and are lower in cost than the specialized formulas. If your baby does not tolerate his formula, consult your pediatrician about which one to try next. While soy based formulas contain all of the nutrients needed to sustain growth, they also contain phytoestrogens that may affect a baby’s growth and development, and they hinder the absorption of zinc and calcium. According to an FDA paper, the AAP states “Healthy full-term infants should be given soy formula only when medically necessary." (http://www.fda.gov/Fdac/features/596_baby.html) Specialized formulas for allergic babies are more expensive, and should be used on the recommendation of a pediatrician.

Bottles:

If your formula feed your baby, you will need bottles, nipples (teats), and a bottle brush for effective cleaning. There are many types and styles of bottles available, and what you choose depends upon your preference.
Bottles with disposable liners are fairly easy to use and easy to clean, but they are more expensive than other types because the liners have to be purchased throughout the months that your baby uses a bottle. Plastic bottles are lightweight, and most are easy to clean with hot soapy water and a brush. In recent months, news articles have warned about possible dangers from the leaching of a chemical called bisphenol A or BPA into milk from the plastic when bottles are heated, and also from the linings of the can the formula comes in. Although the FDA states that plastic bottles do not present a hazard to babies, you might want to research the different brands to see which are considered safer before purchasing bottles for your baby. A google search turned up lists of brands which are BPA free.

Different babies do better with different types of nipples. You should choose those with a slow flow at first, especially for a very young baby. If the milk flows too fast the baby may choke, or take in too much air. Be sure to replace nipples that become worn so that they do not break during a feeding. At times a baby who is teething may chew on the nipple and cause tiny pieces to come off, so inspect them on a regular basis.

Formula Preparation:

Infant formula comes in three forms: ready to feed, concentrate, and powder. Ready to feed formula is the easiest to use. It can be stored at room temperature until the can is opened, and is fed to the baby directly as it comes from the can. It is, however, expensive compared to the other types. Both other forms of formula must be mixed with water before feeding. It is very important to read the directions on the can to be sure that you add exactly the right amount of water so that the milk the baby receives is neither too dilute (which could lead to malnutrition) nor too concentrated (which could be hard on the baby’s kidneys). Some pediatricians (and the World Health Organization) recommend boiling all water prior to using it for a baby. Other doctors feel that it is OK to use water directly from the tap as long as it has been proven safe for drinking. If you are not sure, ask your pediatrician. Powdered formula is not sterile, and in recent months, reports have warned about the potential contamination of some such formulas with Enterobacter sakazakii, a bacteria that can cause infections in all ages, but newborns (under 1 month of age) and premature babies are at greatest risk. The World Health Organization recommends that formula given to these infants be ready to feed, or concentrate. If powdered formula must be used for a newborn, it should be prepared with boiling water or heated almost to boiling, then cooled before feeding to kill the bacteria if it is present. Once it is prepared, the formula should be refrigerated or kept cold with ice packs until the baby is fed. Discard any unused milk left in the bottle after feeding, since bacteria multiply quickly in warmed milk. Heating baby bottles in the microwave is not recommended because “hot spots” that can scald a baby may occur. If you do use a microwave, be sure to shake the bottle thoroughly to mix the formula completely. (Never microwave expressed breastmilk because that would kill some of the living cells that protect the baby from illness.)

Feeding the Baby:

Feeding time is very important in terms of your baby’s emotional and social well-being. You should always hold your baby in your arms when giving him a bottle, and cuddle him close. This is a good time to talk to your baby, look into his eyes, and watch him smile and interact with you. His head should be slightly elevated because most bottle nipples flow fast enough to choke a baby who is lying flat when he swallows. When feeding a newborn, stop and try to burp the baby every ounce or so. As baby grows, he can take in larger amounts without burping. Ask your pediatrician how much formula to feed your baby. Don’t force him to finish a bottle if he stops drinking and acts full. Most babies know how much they need, and overfeeding can predispose him to obesity later on. Never prop a bottle because of the danger of choking, and don’t put your baby to bed with a bottle. Milk that remains on his teeth during the night will promote tooth decay.

However your baby is fed, feeding time should be very comfortable and enjoyable for both of you.

What is the best container for freezing and reheating?

I batch cook lunches for my husband and children to take with them to work and school. I portion everything, freeze it, then they reheat it in the same container. Right now I use Gladware, but I keep hearing about how unhealthy it is to microwave certain plastics. I don't want to spend a ton of money since these containers can be broken or lost by the kids, but I'd rather spend some money than give them something that's not good for their health - it would totally defeat the purpose of my making these lunches in the first place.

Amazon sells sets of Rubbermaid Easy Find Lids, which are listed as BPA free... Is this good? Any other suggestions?

Most any container with the food wrapped in foil will preserve and help to protect it from dehydration & freezer burn. I use both the rubbermaid type and zip-lock baggies.
