How can you tell whether or not plastics contain BPA (Bisphenol A)?
A lot of plastics made for food and beverage is not marked "BPA Free" so is there any way of knowing for sure?
For example, if a pet dish has "U.S. FDA Approved Plastic Safe for Food and Water" on the label and on the bottom there is a #5 in the recycle symbol with letters "PP" below it, could that still contain BPA? The label also indicates it's top rack dishwasher safe and break resistant.
We have just had this on tv, I'm now very wary as they say they shouldn't be refilled, even water bottles so it's obviously quite a serious problem, I think I might stick to tap water and drink from a glass from now on especially if tupperware is affected by it too, that's just plain scary ~ It makes you wonder what diseases they can cause

How do I keep my lululemon pants from tilling or from being wrecked by fabric abrasion? 10 points!?
I have just invested in a pair of lululemon groove pants and I have heard not-so-good comments about how it tills after the first wash (extra fast!) or how it is quickly wrecked by fabric abrasion. Can anyone with experience with Luon fabric lulu pants tell me how I can take care of them so that they will last very long? Like how to wash my pants and what-not? I had a luon origami jacket and I loved it, until it began tilling a week later! What a waste of $120 on a supposedly good sports jacket! Serious answers only, please, and only from those who really know how to take care of this stuff. thanks! 10 points to the best answer!
Here are some great care tips for products made of technical fabrics
*wash in cold water
*do not use fabric softener (this includes dryer sheets) it will clog the pores and not be as moisture wicking
*wash only with other technical fabrics, avoiding natural fabrics like cotton.
*hang to dry rather than putting them in the dryer
*avoid contact with velrco

The Nordicware Popcorn Popper is one that actually works in the microwave. The 3-Qt. Popper makes light and fluffy popcorn in about 4 minutes. Just place 1/2-cup of popcorn kernels in the bottom bowl and cover with the lid. No oil needed, makes up to 12 cups of popped corn..
Made of gemstone, an unbreakable, chip-proof cookware material, the Nordic Ware corn popper efficiently transmits microwave energy directly to the popcorn kernels, popping them quickly without oil. It produces the results of a hot-air popper without an additional appliance. This oil-free method is refreshing when compared to bagged corn, because you don't have to contend with grease, salt, and artificial flavoring unless you dress the corn yourself after cooking. However, take care to monitor the progress of corn during the first use. The manufacturer lists a three-to-five-minute cook time for 1/2 cup of unpopped kernels, but as microwave ovens vary, it could take considerably less time to pop. And overcooked corn burns fast using this method. Luckily, the base and lid are designed not to warp or melt, so burned kernels won't damage them. Use this versatile popper for cooking, storing, and serving popcorn and other snacks. The popper base is also ovenproof. --Carol Gnojewski

I microwaved brownie mix for 3 minutes on high in rubbermaid plastic container..should I eat it?
I heard something in plastics cause cancer when it is microwaved..I used a rubbermaid servin' safe container but it did not have BPA free or microwave safe on it. should I eat the brownie? I ate some in the middle though
It is unhealthy and unsafe, especially if it didn't have a BPA free or microwave safe tag on it. Don't stress that you've eaten some in the middle, but don't eat anymore. A brownie won't kill you this time, but try not to make a habit of it. My mother has had cancer twice and she's cancer-free, healthy, and going strong, so I know how scary it is. But to sum it up, I wouldn't eat any more. Hope this helped.
what kind of things are in style last year? is retro-type still in? I don't really follow the crowd but I usually like what's in style, that's why I wear it. I'm going into grade 8. Are jeans, converse, flip-flops, UGGS, long tube tops (or belly tops?) still in? what kind of bags for school will be in style this year? I know last year the TNA bags were really popular, but so were backpacks with cute designs.
I usually shop at Garage, but they're still selling V-necks with thick stripes, is that even in
anymore? do you have any ideas of stores not-online that I can shop at in Canada? also, what kind of hairstyles are still in style? what about side-swept bangs? but I really need to know what kind of schoolbag to buy. I recently bought a lululemon bag that could work, but I dont really want to use it every day, as I dont want it to be stolen or in rough shape.
jeggings are in. converses are not really going to be so popular anymore. flip flops arent very cute unless they are pretty sandals iwht cute designs. DO NOT WEAR UGGS!!! they are like a fashion crisis, why does everyone wear them? go for brown leather boots that are knee high, you can pair them with dark wash jegging, a plain white tee, a purple cardigan, and a dark orange/ brown/ or auburn scarf. messenger bags are adorable. side swept bangs are cute but full bangs are great for fall, dont get them to thick! if you do get full bangs, blow dry them with an around 2 inch round brush. then straighten the rest of your hair. if youve got dark brown hair, lighten it up with different shades of brown highlites. for example:caramel, chocolate, golden brown. get all those mixed in on the top of your head and on the bottom. go for warm colors and dress warmly. i live in america but these styles can go anywhere except for really hot locations lol.
Enjoy refreshing lemon water, raspberry iced tea and more. Crystal clear acrylic pitcher has removable fruit infusion rod that screws into the lid. Open slots in rod allow liquid and fruit to mix naturally. Refill the pitcher without replacing the fruit..
Researchers across the world are taking note of the ways a body's alkaline or acid content can affect overall health. For several decades, Japanese researchers have suggested that many adult degenerative diseases, such as arthritis, high blood pressure, diabetes, gout, indigestion, osteoporosis, cancers, and cardiac disorders may be attributed to an accumulation of acids in the body and poor cell circulation. They believe that even asthma, migraine headaches, back pain, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, morning sickness, angina and constipation may be relieved by raising alkaline levels in the body.
Proponents of alkaline water claim it works in two ways. First, the pH in our body ranges from zero to 14, with one through six being acidic, 7.0 being neutral, and above seven being alkaline. Studies have indicated that the closer your pH is to 7.35 - 7.45, the higher your level of health and well being and the higher your ability to resist the onset of disease.
Our bodies' natural systems work to keep the blood and fluids surrounding our cells at a slightly alkaline level. However, when we digest and burn food to provide energy, the waste products left behind are acidic. In an optimal world, we rid our bodies of these acidic wastes immediately through breathing, the kidneys, bowels, and our skin. Unfortunately, due to pesticides, pollution, processed foods and too much stress, these acids not only build but remain in our bodies over time. Drinking alkaline water can work as a solvent to neutralize acid residues in your body and help buffer against the acids forming in the first place by helping the body achieve a balanced pH.
More people today are researching the benefits of high alkaline water, how the body's alkaline level can affect their health and whether there is an alkaline water cure or prevention for many common ailments.
Cancer
Cancer cannot exist in an oxygen-rich environment, which is why you never hear of anyone having heart cancer, the heart being oxygenated through its constant blood flow. Alkaline water increases the stable oxygen in your body, thus, the belief by many that high alkaline water can help ward off cancers that take hold while the body has an acidic pH.
Kidney disease
As the body consumes toxins found in the air and in food, the kidneys become over-burdened with acidic wastes. Nephritis, bladder disease, and uremia poisoning are all acid-related conditions, which can be helped greatly by increasing the alkaline content of the bloodstream. Kidney stones, which begin as tiny grains and gradually build into solid stones, are composed of phosphates, which are acidic. Drinking alkaline water may prevent kidney stones from forming in the first place, and even after their formation, may help dissolve them.
Diabetes
Due to overeating, the body's pancreas struggles to produce enough insulin to cope with the excess glucose, weakening it over time. When the body is lacking calcium ions, the release of the insulin hormone is impaired, leading to an acidic blood condition. Some doctors in Japan believe that treating insulin-dependent diabetes with alkaline water can lower sugar levels and in some cases, reverse the condition.
Osteoporosis
Many people believe that taking too many calcium supplements can lead to calcium deposits in the body. However, calcium deposits are leached from the body and not from nutritional supplements. The actual causes of the deposits are a lack of hydrogen and alkaline minerals, which causes calcium to be removed from the bones and tissues, resulting in osteoporosis. Drinking alkaline water may also prevent this critical leaching of calcium from needed areas.
Availability Today
Many people have found that drinking alkaline water daily gives them tremendous health benefits and an overall feeling of better health. The best alkaline waters come from deep, natural wells, just the way nature intended. Years ago, people came from all over the country to drink high alkaline mineral waters (referred to as healing waters at that time) in many towns across Texas. The only natural wells in Texas still producing the high alkaline mineral water are found in Mineral Wells. A few of the most popular waters with a naturally high pH include: Crazy Water, Fiji and Evamor.

A filtration system can save money in several aspects of your life. The fastest way you can cut expenses is going to an area where everyone is touched, groceries. These options will mainly focus on families, but it can help everyone when they shop. Mom and dad take notes and I want you to take my concepts to a higher level.
First, when you purchase a whole house water filtration system you can change your life style by not purchasing cases of bottled water. Next, go purchase a few large liquid pitchers (glass or plastic) if you don't already have some.
Now when you go shopping purchase Koolaid powder packets. These are the small envelopes where you need to add the sugar yourself. You make pitchers of Koolaid or lemonade and you choose how much sugar to give your kids. No more pop is now being purchased either. You save money with no pop and the children are not boucing all over the walls from sugar, like they need the extra boost right.
Second, you can purchase a juice drink like cranberry, fruit, or apple. I personally like V8 Splash. Mom or Dad you know what flavors the kids like. Anyway, purchase the juice and get out a pitcher when you get home and dilute it with the filtered water, 50% is probably too much. If you pour a cup stop it at 3/4 - 2/3 of the way up then 1/4 or 1/3 filtered water. Wing the measurements amounts in balance to the amount of sugar in the drink. You may have to test this for taste try not to water it down too much. The kids won't drink it. Cut down on the sugar and you do not use as much juice as fast. Depending on the size of the pitcher or container, you may need a lid to minimize spilling. How about something cool to use with a filtration system like flavored ice boxes.
Third, purchase some extra plastic ice cube trays for make those flavored ice cubes. You need tooth picks with the clear plastic cling wrap. You pour in the juice, level it out. Cover it with that plastic wrap and seal up the top cover. Poke holes through the plastic cover with the tooth picks into the middle of each individual cube to create little handles. Place the tray carefully in the freezer and let the time do the work for 2-4 hours. You do not need to buy popsicles or ice cream all the time, but a money saving change of pace.
Fourth, I have one more simple beverage idea. If you purchase some fresh limes or lemons and squeeze them into a fresh glass or pitcher of pure filtered water. You have something different and refreshing. Instead of using fresh lemons or limes you could purchase those little lime juice or lemon juice containers that have to be kept in the refrigerator after you open it. Odds are most people already knew about this idea. But you can always spice it up or mix it up with anything you wish to get create something excellent.
Lastly, anyone that takes those diet instant powder packets has the same concept here. Just use a thermos or a large portable plastic travel cup. Check the package that says how much water to mix with the instant water packet, obviously. Use this with Gatorade or tea bags, but not the instant powder in a jar if it has sugar in it. You can always measure your sugar intake with a measuring cup or by purchasing one of those 100 sugar packet boxes just to get an idea of how much sugar you use in your beverages if any. You regulate these as you need to.

Why Organic? Choosing organic is choosing to live a healthier life. Organic foods are produced without the use of potentially harmful chemicals and synthetic pesticides or growth hormones. This is even more important when we consider infants. For four to six months following birth, infants receive most of their nutrition from breast milk or infant formula. It is so important that these formulas contain the safest ingredients. If ingested, potential toxic chemicals or heavy metals can lead to compromised immune system development. Likewise, young infants consume disproportionately high levels of fruits and vegetables when compared to adults. This increases their risk of exposure to potential contaminants found among non-organic products. Finally, Earth's Best products do not contain genetically engineered ingredients (GEIs), made by inserting genes from one plant into a strain of another to produce more crops or control pests. Why organic? It is better for you, your child and the environment they will grow up in. I am a stay-at-home, nursing, co-sleeping mom with an 11.5 month old. I am 5 wks 1 day pregnant and nursing is deffinately causing uterine contractions ( I can feel cramping when I nurse) and I have a history of miscarriage. So, I have to wean as quick as possible. My DD has never accepted a bottle and only taken a few sips at a time from a sippy cup. And she had never accepted a pacifier either.
How do I wean quickly with the least amount of trauma? Do I wean to a bottle so she still has the sucking sensation? Do I wean to cup because she is older? What do I give her? Stage 2 formula smells gross, like blood, I think because of the iron they add to it. But I don't know if she is ready to regular milk. Should I mix formula and milk? Also, what brand of bpa free bottle or sippy is best for transitioning a breastfed baby?
She eats solids just fine but still nurses, just like a bottle-fed baby would be doing both at this age also.
The cramping during breastfeeding is normal and is not associated with miscarriage. Your best bet would be to take red raspberry leaf and vitamin C.
Honestly I don't know what would be worse weaning and then miscarrying and knowing what you took away from your daughter. Or continuing and miscarrying and blaming yourself even though it has nothing to do with breastfeeding.
Realistically the chances of miscarrying are the same either way.
There is no way to really wean abruptly with no trauma, and any gradual method is going to take you out of miscarriage range anyway. The only way to figure out what cup she will take is to try. However you are probably going to have to stop sleeping with her as well, I can't even imagine the stress of stopping both at once.
She has no need of either formula or cow's milk as long as her diet is sufficient.
What are miscarriage and preterm labor experts saying?
Lesley Regan, PhD, MD, heads the Miscarriage Clinic at St. Mary’s Hospital in London, the largest referral unit in Europe, and is the author of Miscarriage: What every woman should know. She was surprised to hear that anyone considers issues related to miscarriage to be reasons for weaning. She added:
Once a pregnancy is clinically detectable, breastfeeding should pose no added risk of pregnancy loss. There isn’t any data suggesting a link between breastfeeding and miscarriage, and I see no plausible reason for there to be a link.
Obstetrician David Weismiller, MD, wrote a synthesis of research on preterm labor for the American Academy of Family Physicians; he is an assistant professor and director of women's health in the Department of Family Medicine at East Carolina University School of Medicine, Greenville, NC. He concurs that there is no evidence that implicates breastfeeding in increasing the risks of preterm labor in healthy pregnancies.
... from Chapter 12: Health Concerns
Read other excerpts from this book
"It has been a pleasure to have the opportunity to read this authoritative account on breastfeeding during pregnancy. I am delighted to have been asked to comment specifically on the risks of miscarriage for a breastfeeding woman. Hilary Flower has provided a detailed explanation that is easily accessible to the lay person, as to why the normal pregnant uterus only responds weakly to the action of oxytocin hormone until the very end of pregnancy. Undoubtedly, this is one of nature's own safety checks to prevent miscarriage and preterm labour in women continuing to breastfeed regularly during their next pregnancy. I feel sure that this book will provide women with confidence and reassurance to believe that 'breast is best' for their baby."

The specter of breastfeeding-induced preterm labor appears to spring in large part from an incomplete understanding of the interactions between nipple stimulation, oxytocin, and pregnancy.
The first little-known fact is that during pregnancy less oxytocin is released in response to nipple stimulation than when a woman is not pregnant.5
But the key to understanding breastfeeding during pregnancy is the uterus itself. Contrary to popular belief, the uterus is not at the beck and call of oxytocin during the 38 weeks of the “preterm” period. Even a high dose of synthetic oxytocin (Pitocin) is unlikely to trigger labor until a woman is at term.6
Instead, the uterus must actively prepare in order for labor to commence. You could say that there are two separate states of being for the uterus: the quiescent baby-holder and the active baby-birther. These states make all the difference to how the uterus responds to oxytocin, and so, one can surmise, to breastfeeding. While the baby is growing, the uterus is geared to have a muffled response to oxytocin; at term, the body’s preparations for labor transform the uterus in ways that make it respond intensely to oxytocin.
Many discussions of breastfeeding during pregnancy mention “oxytocin receptor sites,” the uterine cells that detect the presence of oxytocin and cause a contraction. These cells are sparse up until 38 weeks, increasing gradually after that time, and increasing 300-fold after labor has begun.6,7 The relative scarcity of oxytocin receptor sites is one of the main lines of defense for keeping the uterus quiescent throughout the entire preterm period—but it is not the only one.
A closer look at the molecular biology of the pregnant uterus reveals yet more lines of defense. In order for oxytocin receptor sites to respond strongly to oxytocin they need the help of special agents called “gap junction proteins”. The absence of these proteins renders the uterus “down-regulated,” relatively insensitive to oxytocin even when the oxytocin receptor site density is high. And natural oxytocin-blockers, most notably progesterone, stand between oxytocin and its receptor site throughout pregnancy. 8,9,10
With the oxytocin receptor sites (1) sparse, (2) down-regulated, and (3) blocked by progesterone and other anti-oxytocin agents, oxytocin alone cannot trigger labor. The uterus is in baby-holding mode, well protected from untimely labor.4

As every parent knows, rubber duckies and little toy boats tend to multiply in the bath. Rather than allowing them to lurk underfoot on the bathroom floor or sit forlornly in the empty tub once the splish-splashing is over, why not scoop 'em up with the ever-so-cute Frog Pod? This bright green plastic frog can be mounted on any bathroom wall with the included bracket and adhesive. A built-in shelf at the top stores shampoo or other bath products, while (this is the best part) the removable scoop can be used to pick up, rinse, and drain toys. Additional toys or scrubby sponges can be hung from the frog's splayed fingers and toes. There's plenty of room for toys (no more than 10 pounds worth is the packaging caution - 10 pounds!), and the design is charming and appealing to grownups and kids alike. To avoid trouble with the Frog Pod falling off the wall, make sure to follow mounting directions carefully. It's especially important to use a dry wall, allow for a long adhesive curing time, and don't cross the grout with the adhesive strips. Once it's really on, the frog pod should provide handy, stylish, and mildew-free bath toy storage for a good long time. And no yucky, useless suction cups! --Emilie Coulter
