I got some small tumblers at Target that I think are acrylic. They look like clear plastic. They came with three different prints: monsters, butterflies and letters of the alphabet. Anyone know if these are indeed acrylic? And if so, is acrylic a bpa-free material? Pthalate free also?

No: Acrylic is poly methyl methacrylate.

BPA or Bis-phenol, A is the monomer used to make polycarbonate.

Acrylic has no BPA or pthlates. Pthalates are used to make poly vinyl chloride, or PVC soft and flexible.

It is hard to tell if your tumblers are acrylic or polycarbonate. Unmodified, acrylic has a lower impact strength than polycarbonate. It is also more scratch resistant, but it can be modified with rubber (not pvc) to give it better impact strength. Acrylic softens and melts at a lower temperature than polycarbonate. Both are very transparent.

Everyday we hear of more things in our environment that can harm us. From drugs in our water and hormones in our food to toxins in our cleaning products, it seems that everything causes cancer. When it comes to our babies, we moms sometimes wish we could keep them in a bubble for the first few years of their lives. What can we realistically do to raise a natural baby in a toxic world?

1) Breastfeed

Breastfeeding gives both baby and mom many health advantages. For the purpose of this article, I'll mention just a few, like the fact that breastfed babies are less harmed by pesticide exposure. They also fare better if you choose to vaccinate, suffering fewer reactions. Even though sometimes the media reports on environmental toxins found in mom's milk, what is often left out of the picture is that the same toxins are found in cow's milk, from which formula is made. And since breastfed children enjoy greater health even in adulthood, breast is still - and always will be - best.

Once baby is using a cup or if you're pumping and offering bottles, be sure to use glass or BPA free bottles and cups. Bisphenol-A is a plastic additive that has been linked to cancers and other serious health issues. While we can't avoid plastics entirely in our modern world, reducing the cumulative exposure is important. You can thankfully find BPA free bottles and other feeding products by doing just a little digging.

2) Cloth Diaper

Grandma was right - cloth diapers really are better for your baby. They mean less diaper rash, less allergy, and more money in baby's college savings fund. Cloth diapers are much more fun nowadays. They're made from modern fabrics that wick moisture away from baby, have waterproof covers, and are darn cute to boot! An added plus is that cloth diapered babies tend to potty train several months earlier.

3) Natural Skin Care

Who doesn't love that new baby smell? Of course, we need to be careful about what we put on our baby's sensitive skin. Since the skin absorbs what we slather on it, if we wouldn't eat it, we probably shouldn't put it on our baby's skin. Some ingredients to avoid are: parabens, synthetic perfumes, talc and SLS (sodium laurel sulfate).

Your baby really doesn't need much on his skin, but if you can't resist, try the Earth Mama Angel Baby, Weleda or California Baby product lines for safer alternatives.

City Water, Well Water, Bottled Water: Know What You’re Drinking

We all depend on water for our survival and we all have it running in our homes.  Regardless of if you are using city water, well water and bottled water you run the risk of taking in toxins and contaminates; some sources run a bigger risk than others.  Do you know what is in your drinking water?  It is often chlorine, chloramines, lead, pesticides, pharmaceuticals and even feces and without the best drinking water filters you may be at risk!

 

Our drinking water quality continues to fall and the government is not doing much about it.  Chlorine or worse yet, chloramines are being added to our water supply to act as a disinfectant and with the levels used this in itself poses a serious risk.  Even purchased drinking water programs often fail to filter out all of the chemicals and contaminates in the water used and many of them do not remove chloramines.  Chloramines are a combination of chlorine and ammonia and can become carcinogenic when combined with some organic compounds, the same organics that are commonly found in our water sources.  Another problem is posed with bottled water and that is the toxins that are in the bottles.  BPA in plastic drinking water bottles has been linked to cancer making another concern we must keep in mind with our drinking water.

 

Additionally our ground water is suffering much contamination with the huge level of pesticides, animal feces from farming and other contaminates that reach our ground water and put us in risk.  This is why, no matter what the source of your drinking water is, water filters are a necessity.

 

We have established that water filters for our drinking water such as under the sink water filters are a must, but can we really afford to neglect the contaminates and toxins that are in the water that we shower in, wash our clothing and dishes in and brush our teeth with?

 

The human body contains about 60% water.  The quality of the water we drink is important; however, equally important is the water we expose our bodies to.  Our skin absorbs everything that it comes in contact with including contaminates and toxins that are in the water while we shower.  The longer we are exposed to the water the worse that exposure is and children who enjoy playing in the bath for thirty to forty minutes are at an increased risk.  This can be lessened greatly with the installation of a whole house water filtration system.

 

We need water to survive; however, that survival can be made much longer when the water is pure and clean and free from toxins.  If you are not using the best drinking water filters or better yet, whole house water filtration, you may be consuming chlorine, sediments including rust, drugs, industrial waste, animal waste and in total about 80,000 chemicals and toxins.

 

City water, well water and even bottled water is simply not always safe for human exposure.  High quality water filters can protect you and your family from the harmful and often deadly contaminates in the water.  With all the pollution and toxins in the world today that increase our risks of cancer, home water filters can greatly reduce some of the risks.

FORMULA QUESTION!! how do you mix yours?

(poor milk prodeuction , breastfeeding not an option so save the preaching ladies )

OKay On the back of the formula container it has the directions, and says add sterile water to bottle then add powder.

( I use Playtex drop-in, with those cheaper bpa-free drop-ins that come in a roll of 100)

My son should be drinking about 7 oz. so i add 7 oz. of wate t o bottle BUT after adding the powder i end up with like 8 or more oz. of milk?? and usually a mess

So should I start adding the powder first instead?? I don't get it! what do you do?

the formula i use is a one scoop to 2 ounces. you always do water first then the 3 and a half scoops to the 7 ounces. i also used the platex drop ins to what i did was do a scoop shake it down a little bit then do the other scoops so there was room then put the cover on and shake it all up. i also used the playtex expandable 8-10oz bags because the cheaper ones the bags are only 8 oz so it doesnt realy give you room so i suggest i know there more expensive but they are worth get the plate expandle 10 oz bags and you will have plenty of room for the powder if you dont want to spend that money then go out and buy a 2 dollar cheap 8 or 10 oz bottle and mix it in that then pour it into the playtex drop in bottle

but ALWAYS put the water in first if you put the powder in first you wont have 76 oz of water and then the your baby will most likely get constipated because to much powder to the water

The long awaited day is almost here! Soon you will hold a precious baby in your arms, and you want everything to be perfect!

Bringing home a newborn baby, especially when it is your first, can be daunting. Such big changes and unknowns can cause a new mom stress. "De-stressify" your preparation with this newborn baby checklist. It will help give you the confidence to know you are prepared!

The following newborn baby checklist can be used as a guideline in the quest to be prepared for your new arrival. While no checklist will have you prepared for EVERYTHING (like finding out your mother-in-law will be coming to "help" for a few weeks), this one ought to come close!

Clothing - Newborn babies grow into the next size very quickly! Don't go crazy purchasing the tiny newborn clothing items, or you may find that your baby has outgrown them before he/she has even had a chance to try them on! By the time your baby is about 8-9 pounds, you will need the 3 month old clothing (these will last until your baby is about 12 pounds). Some larger babies even skip the newborn size altogether!

The quantities listed here are based on the assumption that you will be washing your laundry at least 2 times per week.

• 5-10 newborn sized outfits
• 2 sweaters
• 5-7 sleepwear
• 2-4 wearable blankets or sleep sacks
• 4-6 onsies
• dress clothes
• 2 pairs of mittens (for preventing scratches)
• hats - one for warmth and one for shade
• snowsuit - do NOT use when your baby is in his/her car seat
• 6-10 pairs of socks (more is better because they are so little that they get lost or "eaten" by the washing machine)
• accessories - such as shoes, hair decor, jewelry
• mild laundry detergent

Bathing and Grooming
- When my first baby was born, we had very little in the way of baby supplies - and nothing for bathing. Do you know what we discovered? We didn't really
need
much. He got perfectly clean when I bathed him in the bathroom sink and washed his hair with the kitchen sink hose.

So why did I include most of the following items in this newborn baby checklist? Convenience. There is a LOT to be said for convenience when you have a newborn baby in the house!

• baby tub or baby bathing sponge
• 4 baby washcloths
• 2 hooded towels
• baby lotion
• baby brush
• infant nail clippers
• baby shampoo/body wash
• bath thermometer

Nursery Items
- A beautifully decked-out nursery is a fun way to prepare for your new baby. Giving the baby's room personality and then putting away the items he/she will be using makes it start feeling like he will REALLY be arriving soon! Consider:

• dresser
• baby size hangers
• rocking chair
• cd player with soothing cds
• night light
• nursery decor - wall hangings, window coverings, bed skirt

Diapering
- "Changing a diaper is a lot like getting a present from your grandmother - you're not sure what you've got but you're pretty sure you're not going to like it." (Foxworthy) No baby checklist would be complete without "covering" this.

• wet wipes - either commercial or home-made
• changing table with a water-proof pad
• 3 washable changing pad covers
• hand sanitizer
• diaper rash remedy
• wipe warmer
• diaper disposal or diaper pail with liners
• basket or diaper holder for keeping diapers orderly

  If using disposable diapers:

• 10-12 disposable diapers per day

  OR

  If using cloth diapers:

• 24-36 cloth diapers
• 8-10 diaper covers
• inserts and liners
• diaper pins if the chosen system calls for them
• diaper sprayer

Feeding
- After you have decided whether you will be breastfeeding or bottle feeding, you will want to consider which items you will need to assist you in growing a healthy baby.

Breastfeeding Needs:
• 3-5 nursing bras
• nursing pads - washable or disposable
• breast pump
• nipple cream
• breast milk storage containers
• breast feeing pillow
• nursing cover
• 10 burp rags

Bottle Feeding Needs:
• bottles (BPA free) - start with just a few until you know what your baby will prefer
• nipples (clear silicone)
• formula - don't stock up until you know it will "agree" with your baby
• 10 burp rags
• bottle brush
• bottle warmer
• drying rack
• sterilization bags

Sleeping
- Newborn babies spend about 18 out of every 24 hours sleeping. At least
some
of that time you will want to put him/her down to tend to your own needs. Your baby's safety during that time is paramount. Providing a safe, comfortable, familiar place to sleep will help your baby establish good sleeping habits which will in turn facilitate YOUR sleep. You will need:

• sleeping place - crib with mattress, portable crib, bassinet, Moses basket, or co-sleeper
• 2 mattress pads
• 3 fitted sheets
• 6-8 receiving blankets
• baby monitor
• a small fan for air circulation and white noise

Traveling
- Whether it is across town or across the country - you will want to show off your baby (or at least re-stock on diapers). Traveling with a newborn is more complicated than grabbing your keys and walking out the door, but you will be prepared for any trip if you have:

• car seat
• diaper bag
• replacement car seat cover
• stroller
• baby sling or carrier
• blankets of varying thicknesses
• car seat travel bag for air travel
• portable crib

Health
- No one likes to think about their baby becoming ill, but sooner or later it is bound to happen. Be prepared by having the following items on hand:

• nasal aspirator/bulb syringe
• petroleum jelly
• digital thermometer
• rubbing alcohol & q-tips (for umbilical cord care)
• infant acetaminophen - use with newborns only under advisement of your pediatrician
• saline nasal spray
• a great pediatrician
• Don't forget to add your baby to your health insurance policy!

Safety
- Your newborn won't be mobile for a few months, but you will want to have safety items in place well before that occurs.

• safety gates
• corner/edge bumpers
• safety locks
• outlet covers

Development and Entertainment
- Most of your newborn baby's early development will come from the cuddling, singing, talking, and interaction provided by the ones who love him/her the most. A few items that will stimulate and entertain him/her while you are occupied will be beneficial to you both.

• baby mobile or a plastic mirror for the crib
• a few toys of differing textures
• baby swing and/or baby bouncer
• baby book for recording all of the milestones

A common "rookie mom" mistake is caring for her baby to the exclusion of caring for herself. Don't forget to make "mommy care" a priority, too. Add
your
favorite bubble bath to your newborn baby checklist - and then use it!

parents, do you use glass or plastic bottles?

I will be a first time mom in October and it just occurred to me that I haven't really looked into what type of bottle I want to try to use for my baby. I plan on breast feeding but I know I will pump sometimes and daddy will want to feed her.
So, do you use glass or BPA free plastic bottles and why? Have you tried other bottles, why did you like/dislike them? Have you tried Dr Browns? Do they work as well as they say? What is your experience with sterilizing bottles,choosing nipples, etc? For a breast feeding baby, what is the best nipple, in your opinion?And while I'm asking, how many bottles should I start out with? Like I said, Im a new mom, so Im kinda clueless! Thank you for your experiences!

At first my baby would only take to the disposable nipples that the hospital sent home but finally we got him onto the soothie bottles! I tried the playtex ventaire bottles but baby didn't care for them. Also tried playtex drop ins, the nipple was too big for his mouth it seemed. I sterilized bottles and nipples at the beginning but soak them with hot soapy water for about a half hour to an hour. Sometimes I put them in my munchkin sterilizer bag into the microwave. (Sell them at walmart). I would start with just a few small bottles at first because you never know if your baby will like one better than another.

Oh, and a cheaper way then buying a lot of bottles would be to buy pacifiers. Most of them are shaped the same way as the nipple on bottles. (If you are going to use one). If they take to a pacifier, likely they will take to the bottle nipple.

Most hospitals will give you a soothie pacifier or nuk.
