When I lived in Hawaii, I learned about all the tourist mistakes. It seems people go to Hawaii with ideas of sun tanning, surfing, and have a great time. However, they do little to prepare to make sure this happens. Well, here is a list of things you need to do before you travel to Hawaii.

Prepare Your Body for the Sun

You do not want to go to Hawaii just to get a sunburn on the first day. Nothing can ruin a trip faster than being sore all over. However, you can prep your body for the direct rays of the sun. They are much stronger in Hawaii so you need to prepare.

The easiest way to prep your body is with going to a tanning salon. You can purchase a month subscription for around $20. The month before you go, start out slow and build up until you can stay the whole 20 minutes.

Know the Islands Attractions

Hawaii is actually a group of islands. Chances are you will only be going to one. Most people go to Oahu and Maui. Some people go to the big island and others go to Kauai.

· Oahu - Is known for its beautiful beaches. You will find Waikiki, North Shore, Sunset Beach, and the Bonsai Pipeline. During winter, you can whale watch, watch surfing competitions and see beautiful waterfalls. Diamond Head is also here. It is an inactive volcano you can climb with spectacular views. You will also find Pearl Harbor here.

· Maui - This island is generally where honeymooners go. It is romantic and fun. It is also the only island with zip lines. You can see the islands from an aerial view by checking them out. If you like waterfalls, then you will have your best chance here.

· The Big Island - Here you have a unique opportunity to see the Kilauea Volcano. It is the only island with an active volcano you can see up close.

· Kauai - You can go horseback riding and it is the best place to see tons of waterfalls. The Kipu Falls is not only a beautiful waterfall but it will allow you to swim in it too!

Tips to Stay Safe

Like everywhere else in the world, tourist fall victim to crime. One of the easiest things to do is take a backpack with you. You will want to leave your purse, wallet and all valuables in your hotel safe. A small backpack is perfect to carry required money (credit cards are best) and your ID.

You will also want to get a small waterproof container to wear around your neck. You can get these at dive shops, camping shops, and other outdoors stores. When you go to the beach, take nothing except your ID, credit card, and some cash. Everything should fit in the waterproof container. Additionally, cheap flip-flops are a must in case they get lost on the beach. You just don't want to wear expensive shoes to the ocean. Better yet, get aqua shoes to protect your feet from the reef.

Most versatile sneaker recommendations?

I'm looking at doing a very long backpacking trip in Latin America that will cover very cold places in Patagonia and the Andes as well as warm rain forest and Mexican deserts.

I would like to find a multipurpose shoe that is warm enough with thermal socks for snow weather yet cool enough for trekking in warmer weather. I will probably have flip flops for warm urban wear, but I will need some kind of sneaker for trekking.

Is there a shoe that does a decent job for a wide range of temperatures? Or do you have any tips or hints about packing shoes for all seasons and terrain?

I get by summer, winter, wet, cold, snowshoeing, Sierra trekking, and jungle trekking in Solomon hiking shoes and/or a pair of Teva sandals.

Where my feet will get wet, either from rain or stream crossings, I could go with either the sandals or shoes, because the light shoes dry quickly and protect my feet a little more and have more cushioning. Wearing only a thin nylon dress sock, such as they sell at Wal-Mart, helps keep the moisture wicking away, and there's no reason to take off your shoes or socks to cross a stream, just wade in carefully, using a stick in case it's slippery. A heavy Thorlo sock that some people think they need for cushioning inside their shoes holds moisture and increases the chances of blisters and jungle rot. Wet shoes will dry while you hike, while boots will stay wet, and as long as you keep moving,

In the snow, in above-freezing conditions, I'll wear the same Solomon shoes and add an Integral Designs vapor barrier liner bootie (http://www.prolitegear.com/cgi-bin/prolitegear/pl_id_vbsocks) as the outermost layer inside the shoe, with my usual thin nylon dress socks and a pair of thicker Thorlo or merino wool socks. That's for day hiking in winter though; at night or around camp, when it gets below freezing or you're not moving, I'd want a pair of down booties or mukluks to avoid the risk of frostbite. http://www.prolitegear.com/sierra_designs_down_mutts.html I actually leave the tops of the VBL booties open under my pants so sweat can escape upwards, wicked by my socks, but snow can't fall in.

You want to stay away from any shoe that's waterproof/breathable like Gore-Tex, even for winter you'd still have to wear a gaiter with that type of shoe in order to keep the snow out, and the VBL replaces both gore-tex and the gaiters!

Northern Kenya offers tourists a diverse array of engaging sites. Although characterized by the harsh desert/semi-desert environment, the region boasts several attractive sites, which lend a unique beauty to the landscape. Cliffs, ranges, caves, ruins and scenic trails are just some of the features that are sure to captivate visitors to the region.

One of the most visited places is Lake Turkana, which holds various interests. When it comes to lakes found in desert regions, Lake Turkana is the largest of its kind worldwide. The lake itself is one of the well-documented prehistoric sites in East Africa. It makes an intriguing study area for those with archaeological interests. Besides the anthropological agenda, the lake rests in an area where significant volcanic activity occurred in past years. Extinct volcanoes and lava topography are characteristic of the area. Yet another site for wildlife lovers is the Marsabit National Park. The surrounding Marsabit Forest supports a diverse mix of animals and rare birds. Many of these animals would not be found here but thanks to the forest environment, you can count on their presence. The cheetah, leopard, rhino, lion, elephant, wart hog, buffalo and antelope are some of the animals you can expect to sight here. The cultural diversity of the nomadic groups, village settings and camel presence also offer visitors yet another aspect of the tourist experience in Northern Kenya.

For those who love water activities, swimming, boat rides and other water sports are available at all these parks.

The area is also home to the majestic Piloto and Nena glaciers and beautiful waterfalls from the Alakaluf Fjord.
